An Inside Look at the New Microsoft 365 E7 License Bundle

Contents

More than one-third of organizations are moving past AI pilots into full-scale operational use. The new Microsoft 365 E7 license bundle was designed for those organizations. It provides the tools they need to manage and secure autonomous agents. It also incorporates a unified, cloud-based platform for zero trust security.

Microsoft 365 E7 became generally available on May 1, 2026. Branded as the “Frontier Suite,” it is the company’s new top-tier enterprise licensing level and the biggest change in licensing in a decade.

For organizations with E5 licenses plus Microsoft Copilot as a standalone add-on, E7 is almost a no-brainer. Organizations with other licenses or more limited use of AI will have to weigh the costs versus the benefits. A qualified Microsoft Solution Provider can provide the guidance organizations need to make the right Microsoft licensing decisions.

Key Components of Microsoft 365 E7

The name “Frontier Suite” reflects Microsoft’s push for organizations to move beyond AI experimentation into a new era of work in which AI agents are core to business operations. Unlike previous suites that primarily added software features, E7 is designed to manage autonomous AI agents as well as human workers.

Microsoft Agent 365 provides the management, governance and security layer required to safely deploy autonomous AI agents across the enterprise. Work IQ is a semantic layer that uses organizational data and collaboration patterns to make AI responses more proactive and context-aware. Microsoft Entra Suite provides advanced zero-trust identity management that extends beyond standard E5 features.

E7 also includes the full enterprise suite of productivity tools (Office apps, Teams), advanced security (Defender) and compliance tools (Purview). Microsoft 365 Copilot is a native component rather than a $30 per month add-on.

What Is Agent 365?

Agent 365 was introduced simultaneously with the Microsoft 365 E7 suite as its core management component. It is the centralized control plane within the Microsoft 365 E7 suite. It helps organizations move from ad-hoc AI experimentation to secure, governed enterprise-scale operations by allowing IT and security teams to manage AI agents with the same rigor as human employees.
The Unified Agent Registry acts as a single source of truth for every agent in the tenant. This includes Microsoft-built agents, third-party partner agents and custom solutions. It specifically targets “shadow AI” by discovering and cataloging unsanctioned agents.

Every agent is assigned a unique identity in Microsoft Entra. This brings agents into standard identity reviews, ensuring they have an assigned sponsor and that their access is periodically recertified. A visual Agent Map and dashboard help admins track real-time behavior, connections to data, performance quality and ROI across the organization.

Security and Compliance Integration

Microsoft 365 E7 significantly advances security and compliance beyond the E5 baseline by focusing on the agentic workforce. Admins have the tools they need to manage an agent’s lifecycle, enforce Conditional Access policies and apply least-privilege permissions.

Lifecycle workflows automate the onboarding and offboarding of both human employees and digital agents to ensure they never keep access longer than needed. Admins use Policy Templates to apply standardized security and compliance guardrails during onboarding.

Direct zero trust network access replaces traditional VPNs by providing identity-aware tunnels to on-premises apps. A secure web gateway inspects agent and user traffic to the internet, filtering out malicious prompt-based attacks and unauthorized AI services.

Microsoft Purview extends DLP and retention policies to agent interactions to prevent data leakage and oversharing. Microsoft Defender detects and blocks malicious agent behavior in runtime, such as prompt injection or unauthorized tool abuse.

Should Your Organization Upgrade to Microsoft 365 E7?

The E7 suite is priced at $99 per user per month, a 13 percent to 15 percent savings compared to purchasing its components individually. Organizations that already pay for E5 ($60) and Copilot ($30) gain Agent 365 ($15 value) and the full Entra Suite ($12 value) for an extra $9 per user per month. For organizations that haven’t fully deployed E5 features, however, some E7 capabilities may sit unused.
Moving directly from E3 ($39) to E7 is a significant cost increase but allows organizations to skip a two-step migration. It provides the full security stack (Defender, Purview) and AI tools in one move.

For some organizations, mixing and matching different licenses is the most cost-effective way to manage costs while meeting specific user requirements. Many organizations assign licenses based on user role or purchase specific features as add-ons for individual users.

A Qualified Solutions Provider Can Help Assure Success

Engaging a Microsoft Solutions Partner is highly recommended when determining whether to upgrade to E7. Microsoft 365 licensing is notoriously complex and subject to frequent price and feature changes. A partner acts as a specialized advisor to ensure customers don’t overspend or leave critical security gaps.
Certified partners use detailed usage data to map users to the most cost-effective tier. This process can reduce total licensing costs by 15 percent to 20 percent. They can also bundle billing, support and licensing into a single agreement, simplifying the management of mixed license tiers.

Proactive review of license assignments helps identify and fix compliance issues, reducing the risk of penalties during a formal audit. Certified partners also help customers align their licenses with future goals and ensure the environment is ready for Copilot and the governance features of Agent 365.

Why Partner with Cerium?

Cerium holds the Microsoft Solutions Partner for Modern Work and Solutions Partner for Security designations. To receive these designations, partners must meet rigorous, data-verified standards.
